How it works

From image acquisition to nowcasting — all processed on the edge device

  1. 01 · CAPTURE

    Capture

Dedicated camera captures the visibility targets

  2. 02 · ANALYZE

    Analysis

Atmospheric extinction coefficient (σ) estimated from target luminance contrast. Processed on the edge device

  3. 03 · MEASURE

    Measure

Meteorological optical range (MOR) at many points and in many directions at once

  4. 04 · FORECAST

    Forecast

Nowcasting from the visibility time series — a core function

  5. 05 · ALERT

    Alerts

Early warning before the low-visibility threshold is reached

  6. 06 · RECORD

    Record

Readings and evidence images stored together

EXISTING METERSMeasure only the scattering in a small sampling volume in front of the sensor. Only numbers remain, limiting spatial representativeness and later verification
SIJUNGObserves visibility as a spatial distribution across the whole field of view. Verifiable with images, with early warning of visibility changes

FAQ · Glossary

Frequently asked questions about visibility meters

Visibility terms

Visibility
The greatest distance at which a black object of suitable size can be recognized by day, or a light of given intensity at night (WMO definition). The basis for safety decisions in aviation, road and maritime operations
Extinction coefficient (σ)
How much light weakens per unit distance through scattering and absorption by aerosols and fog droplets. The larger the value, the lower the visibility
MOR (meteorological optical range)
The path length over which a parallel beam from an incandescent lamp is reduced to 5% of its original luminous flux (WMO definition). MOR ≈ 3/σ. May differ from visually observed visibility depending on lighting and background luminance
Camera-based vs forward-scatter visibility meters
Forward-scatter sensors measure the scattered light in a small sampling volume; camera-based meters measure the luminance contrast of targets in the field of view
Can it be connected to existing CCTV?

It uses dedicated cameras. To ensure measurement accuracy, the dedicated camera and analysis unit are supplied together, and target distances are surveyed and calibrated on site

Can it tell future visibility, not just the current value?

Yes. Visibility nowcasting is a core, built-in function of the SIJUNG system. Future visibility is forecast from the visibility time-series trend and used for low-visibility warning decisions

How does the measurement method differ from conventional visibility meters?

A forward-scatter sensor measures the scattered light in a small sampling volume in front of the sensor. SIJUNG estimates the extinction coefficient from the luminance contrast of targets in the image, derives visibility at many points in the field of view at once, and stores the evidence images as well

How can Korean public institutions buy it?

Products designated as PPS Innovative Products can be purchased through the KONEPS Innovation Market. Designation status for each product is provided on request

Can it be installed outside Korea?

Yes. It has been exported to the Uzbekistan Hydrometeorological Service. The operating screen is available in English, and local languages can be added
